Australia's captain Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
