Nepal's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
