No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” declared the national leader.

The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
