Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
